By the end of the lesson, a child
will be able to;
·
list vocabularies related to picnic accurately
before reading the poem.
·
read the poem fluently and expressively after
modeled reading.
·
identify the rhyming words used in the poem
correctly.
·
write the theme of the poem correctly after the
discussion.
·
recognize the main ideas in the poem correctly
after the class discussion.
1) Pre-Reading
·
Firstly, a teacher will write the title of the
poem ‘Picnic’ on the chalkboard.
·
Teacher will ask children if they have ever gone
to picnic just to activate the background knowledge of the child.
·
After that each child will be asked to list as
many vocabularies related to picnic as possible in their notebook so that they
can make a good prediction on the topic that they are going to learn about.
·
Before actually going into the poem, teacher
will introduce some new words in this poem that may be unfamiliar to the
students such as scraps, littered,
tangled, strings and linnet.
Follow up activity
Teacher will
randomly ask five students to read aloud their lists of words fluently with
correct pronunciation.
2) Reading.
·
Teacher will first read the poem by
demonstrating how to read the poem fluently for at least two times taking care
of pronunciation, enunciation, rhythm and the tone while students will listen
and look at the poem word by word.
·
After that teacher will then divide the students
into 6 groups of 5 members each.
·
Then a teacher will identify each stanza for the
group to read.
·
The group will practice reading the given stanza
for at least two times.
·
They group will take turn to read the stanza
aloud. When the particular groups read, others will listen carefully and they
will read aloud when it is their turn o read the stanza.
Follow up activity:
Teacher will give comments on the
common errors found while reading the text by the groups.
3) Responding.
·
In order to help the children better understand
the text, teacher will ask children to work in groups of 5 members each to
answer the following questions:
a) What
must you remember to do when you go for picnicking?
b) What
will happen if you are elfin wise?
c) What
lesson did you learn from the poem?
d) What
advice would you give to someone who is going on a picnic?
e) Do
you follow this advice yourself while going on a picnic? Explain.
Follow up activity:
A member from each group will present their answers to the whole class.
4) Exploring.
·
Teacher will first explain the concept of
metaphor with some examples to the students to give them the clear
understanding of metaphor.
·
Student will re read the poem.
·
After that in a group student will discuss and
identify the metaphor used in the poem.
·
They will list out two metaphors from the poem.
·
After that they will write what it has been
compared with in the poem as shown below.

Follow up activity:
Groups will
take turn to share their findings and the examples from the text with the whole
class.
5) Applying.
·
Teacher will then divide the students into 6
groups of 5 members each to carry out this activity.
·
Each group will be provided with drawing paper
and colors.
·
They will have to come up with a sketch based on
the theme “Litter Free Surrounding” which is originally depicted by the poem
itself.
·
Based on the sketch, they will also have to
write a paragraph describing about their art work.
Follow up activity:
One member from the group will have
to explain about their sketch to the whole class.
Description : I planned English lesson for class five students. the main objective of this lesson it to teach students new vocabularies and to improve their reading skills. In this lesson students are going to incorporate five reading steps namely pre-reading, reading, responding, exploring and applying which caters in improving their pronunciation, spelling, cognitive, speaking skills, reading skills and many more.
